Tracking School on Your Computer
August 20, 2007

Whether you are a student yourself, the parent of a student, or just someone trying to help an unorganized student, there are many software options avaialble to help. Today we are looking at programs you download and run on your computer, while the next post will tackle online organization.

On the Mac side, your best bet is probably Schoolhouse. This freeware application tracks all aspects of your schooling, including support for terms, courses, assignments, and much more. You can track assignments, to-do lists, notes, and even attach files. Little features, like a big friendly "Ask Instructor" button in the toolbar that opens an e-mail window, show that a great deal of thought has gone in to this software. This is to be expected, since it was first written when the programmer was an 18 year old student starting college. Another freeware program you might want to check out is iProcrastinate.

For Windows, an application that has gotten good reviews seems to be StudyMinder. While the full version costs $30, they have a free version as well. While it looks promising, and seemed to be easy to use, it can be hard to tell for sure until you have used it in a real situation. Since switching to Macs, I have been happily using Schoolhouse.
