PBWiki - Ad Free for Education

August 3, 2007 With a big thank you to Miguel Guhlin for spreading the news, it was great to hear that PBWiki is offering free, advertising-free wikis for educational use. PBWiki is a very friendly, easy to use wiki that provides a great interface for editing. Wikispaces, another online wiki hosting site, also offers free use for education.

As James Byers from Wikispaces noted in a comment on Miguel's post:
Something I'd also like to note about our program for education is that we've gone further than just removing ads, we're giving away our full set of paid features for teachers (teachers get the Plus plan for free: http://www.wikispaces.com/site/pricing. Removing ads is critical, but so to is removing barriers for teachers to get these kinds of tools in their classrooms - privacy options, file size limits, look and feel customization, etc. We don't want a teacher to all of a sudden have to whip out a credit card when they want to upload a few MB of documents!

One complaint I have with Wikispaces that would push me over to PBWiki (despite the great offer from Wikispaces!!!) is that Wikispaces has a much higher barrier for entry into a wiki discussion. Still, I certainly recommend checking out both of these great services. Wikis are wonderful tools for sharing and collaborating...free is just icing on the cake!

What exactly do you mean by "barrier for entry into a wiki discussion"? Give us a comparison, please!

Wikispaces requires that users have an account before they can post messages on the discussion page. You can edit public pages without an account, but to edit private/protected pages you have to sign up for an account. PBWiki allows you to use a generic password that provides access to both editing and commenting without a full registration.

You're dead on Chris. I've used both, and find PBWiki also has a lower learning curve, making it easier for younger students to use. (e.g. it took me awhile to figure out the table of contents on WikiSpaces, mere minutes with PBWiki.)

Also, PBWiki allows greater latitude in text editing, in regards to color, etc. A minor point, but students are very visual and find the constant black of WikiSpaces tedious.
