I'm beginning to love our new site
March 19, 2007

Now that our new web site is live for a week or so I'm beginning to really love it. Yes, there are still bugs to work out (and when you see any, please email me.) In particular, some content is still showing up in funny places. Largely, this is because of tagging "challenges." Tagging, it turns out, is a lot like cataloging. And guess who got a B in cataloging? (keeping me out of Beta Phi Mu  forever...and no, I'm not still bitter.)

For one thing, I'm really thrilled to finally have more bloggers join Amy, and have them featured so prominently on the homepage, right where they belong. So a big welcome to Diane and Chris. This is something I've wanted for a long time. And I hope we can add to our "blogger line-up" in the near future.

I'm also really happy with our Talkback feature. Not only can you easily add comments, you can easily see what others are talking about by clicking on the Talkback tab. As a profession, I think librarians are unique in how we share information. Just look at discussion lists like LM_NET and PUBLIB . Not only do these lists provide much needed information, they are also communities.

But our professional publications, like SLJ, have existed like fortresses in the online world. Oh, we still have our letters to the editor, but bascially we published something, say a feature, then it just sits there, impervious to the reactions of our readers. What are we losing out? Not just opinions--although its fun to read who disagrees and why--but also knowledge. Now with a click our readers can extend what we've published, add their own experience, or lend another perspective. And it's about time.

I would like to extend integrate wiki software into the site, so we can present some features in a wiki format. The "SLJ version" of an article would always exist. But imagine a feature like Graphic Novels for (Really) Young in a wiki version, where readers can augment the annotated bibliography, continuing to add the books that have worked successfully in their library.

Thanks for the blogs and associated feeds. I'm enjoying reading more SLJ than I was before. Cheers!
