National Day of Silence

April 18, 2007

Today is the eleventh anniversary of the National Day of Silence, an annual event held to bring attention to anti-LGBT bullying, harassment, and discrimination in schools. One of the largest student-led actions in the country, the Day of Silence targets unacceptable behavior, like name-calling and violence.

Is your library, or school, participating in the Day of Silence? Let us know. While the Day of Silence web site has plenty of information, it's lacking one thing: books. And while there is a healthy roster of endorsements, there are none from any library organizations.

Our library particiaptes in a schoolwide observance of a "Day of Silence". It is the only day of the year that I can truly say I have a quiet library! The library participates by have a display of books in a prominent area. Our collection has grown over the past few years with the advent of more titles being available from publishers.

The first year our school pariticpated there were some negative comments. However, after a few years the day has become part of the school culture and is widely accepted or tolerated.

I too am surprised that neither ALA or AASL has not officially endorsed the day. Perhaps ALA Council will take up the discussion.

I am interested in knowing how other schools participate. My school is a middle/high school in the northern suburbs of New York City.

I am happy to say that we are not participating. It is an outrage that government funded and schools (funded by my taxes) would participate in such a day. The world is going to hell - FAST.

the day of silence isn't promoting anything other then tollerence for people to have their own oppinions and for people to not mock people for there differences. so maybe they shouldn't use government money, my school doesn't, but if the students want to use there own time and money that should be allowed. people like you are the kind of people who silence people like me...
