A graphic feature
April 11, 2007
One of my goals for this year was to have a graphic artist create one of our features. After all, we write about graphic novels all the time, but how much real experience do any of us have with the medium? Not much. I also thought that our readers would enjoy experiencing graphic storytelling that was actually created for them.
I thought I'd have to wait quite a while to find the right feature, but as soon as the idea entered my head I read Jennifer Bromann's piece about how she managed her library to make it welcoming to kids. It was very clear, very direct...and certainly provocative. We contacted Jennifer, who agreed to participate in our "experiment." Mark Tuchman, our art director, looked for an artists whose style would work well in the magazine, finally locating Ellen Linder in London.
From there, things progressed quickly, with Jennifer and Ellen collaborating virtually. I wish all feature feature editing was this easy! I was really amazed how Ellen took Jennifer's ideas and distilled them, giving them setting and drama, creating something so accessible and fun. This is one of those pieces best read in print, but we've also got it up online.
