Number crunching: How Looking at Graphic Novel Circulation Statistics from Many Perspectives Help You Know What's Really Flying Off the Shelves

November 21, 2009 | Link This | Email this | Comments (4)

The circulation numbers for graphic novel collections have always been a selling point.  Considering my circulations recently, the numbers are truly impressive.  Case Closed, as a series, has circulated over 1200 times (with an average of 40 circulations per volume).  In prose fiction, this number can't even be touched by the Twilight series (352 circulations, average 24 per volume).  If I look at the circulation of books to compare, popular graphic novels are as popular as titl...Read More

Roundtable: Who decides what kids can read?

October 27, 2009 | Link This | Email this | Comments (15)

Rather than the more usual story covering a parent objecting to graphic novels in the library, in this case this article reported library staff at the Jessamine County Library, located in Nicholasville, Kentucky, stepped in to prevent what they dubbed "porn" from being distributed to a child (an eleven year old girl.)  The article, as you can see, is short and under-informed: the women in question were not librarians but circulation desk attendants, and the distinction between masters' degree holding librarians and circulation staff is an important one in the library sphere.  The spelling errors and slant of the article may call into question the facts as presented.  It's apparent that this title was on hold (i.e. at the Circulation desk) for the patron, so it was unclear where the t...Read More

Crogan's Vengeance

March 3, 2009 | Link This | Email this | Comments (0)

Crogan's Vengeance CoverIf you had a pirate in your family tree, I'm betting you'd be begging to hear all the stories.  Who wouldn't?  This beginning of a series of period adventure stories tracking the geneology of the Crogan family is just how this one ancestor Crogan turned pirate.  With sharp artwork, a knack for suspense, and a hero who always stays on the windy side of the "right" side, Crogan's Vengeance is an engaging, quick-witted pirate yarn.

Sweet Indulgences: Guilty Pleasures 2008

December 31, 2008 | Link This | Email this | Comments (0)

Initial D v. 1In the spirit of indulging in less than "good for you" things over the holidays, here are the answers to a question I tossed out to the group: what's been your guilty pleasure this past year in terms of graphic novel reading?  Is there a title or series that, even though you know it's not really great, you love anyway?  Or you realize you keep reading the latest volume first, even if that highly recommended quality title was at the top of your "to read" pile? I asked everyone to consider kids or teen appeal titles, and limit their selections to three.
