Where has summer gone? Weren't we just finding temporary homes for classroom plants and pets, cleaning off windowsills, sorting through supplies, and updating our summer reading lists? While the end of the season brings some regrets (unread books, day trips that didn't happen), there's also much to look forward to–a new school year and the gems of fall publishing.

In this issue of Curriculum Connections, you'll read about some exciting finds including Elise Broach's Masterpiece; hear from Sid Fleischman on his latest biography (Mark Twain); delight in a superb list of school-themed read alouds; learn more about what middle school students want; and savor some delectable offerings from TeachingBooks.net.

Enjoy,

What's New

  • On Insects and Art
I've always had a soft spot for intelligent and talented insects in poetry and prose—A. A. Milne’s Alexander, captured and released in “I found a little beetle” and Chester Cricket, newly arrived from the Connecticut countryside, navigating a busy Manhattan subway station in George Selden's classic, The Cricket in Times Square. And now there’s a splendid new novel to add to my favorites list, Elise Broach’s Masterpiece (Holt, 2008). more » » »

Professional Shelf: Advice from Middle School Students

Students often face challenges different from their teachers' own youthful experiences. In Fires In the Middle School Bathroom: Advice for Teachers from Middle Schoolers (New Press, 2008), Kathleen Cushman and Laura Rogers ponder these and other issues and offer guidance to educators. more » » »
