Congratulations to author Jon Scieszka. Last Friday, he was presented with the first National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature Medal as part of the National Book Festival celebration. Scieszka accepted the ambassador position in January 2008 and has taken it on with his characteristic humor and gusto. He’s been crisscrossing the country since May, bringing books and young people together. That’s something we can all get behind. Click here childrensbookambassador.com for more information and a great video clip of Scieszka talking about the National Ambassador program. - Dodie Ownes, Editor

Teens Know “Best” – Book Reviews from Young Adults

  • Green John. Paper Towns. Penguin. October 2008. ISBN: 978-0-525-47818-8. Gr 8-12.
Quentin (aka Q) is a high school senior in love with childhood friend Margo, who drifted apart from him after a somewhat traumatic childhood incident. One night, she appears dressed all in black at his bedroom window, asking him to join her on a night of revenge. The next day, however, Margo is gone, leaving only a mysterious trail of clues for Q to follow. The whole book is interwoven with John Green's witty teenage dialogue and several moments that had me laughing out loud. more » » »

This book has an interesting story which combines elements of the Pied Piper and Beauty and the Beast. It starts traditionally enough with the children of Hamelin being lured away by a mysterious piper. It then continues, taking the perspective of the piper, Finn, one of Hamelin's children, Marianna, and the crippled boy left behind, Jakob. Marianna is Jakob's older sister, and she is distraught when he is left behind. more » » »
  • Ryan, Amy Kathleen. Vibes. Houghton Mifflin. October 2008. ISBN: 978-0-618-99530-1. Gr 10-12.
I totally fell in love with this book. Amy Ryan really knew what she was doing when she was writing the book because she had the facts right about how teenagers act in high school, like the perverted boys do, and about struggles between parents and kids. The main character Kristi is a teenage girl who is able to read minds, and because of that she has lots of misunderstandings, yet her psychic ability is still great to have. more » » »
