In this Issue

It’s tough to get back into the swing of things after the holiday break, but this is not the time to snooze, unless you’re a bear. And it is impossible to ignore the fact that now it is ‘awards’ season, so keep an eye on the Heavy Medal blog at SLJ.com to stay informed on the latest Newbery news, and don’t forget to visit Allen County Public Library’s Mock Newbery blog to see what titles will be included in their January mock election, just in case you didn’t get that voting thing out of your system in November. – Dodie Ownes, Editor

  • Making the Teacher Connection
Central Rappahannock Regional Library needed to take a good look at their school outreach. Four jurisdictions in the service area were opening more schools but the library was not able to add new staff.  Staff intensive grade K-8 booktalking programs were no longer possible to support. • LibGuides - Worth a Look
If you’re like me, you struggle with ways to get kids and teens to notice and use your library’s resources. Ask a kid or teen (and I have) what they do on the library’s Web site, and they’ll talk about looking up books, and, if you’re lucky, they may say they renew their books. Ask them if they know about the plethora of homework stuff you offer online, and they’ll look at you blankly. more » » »

Media Mania: Book Tie-ins to High-Interest Movies, TV Shows, and More

  • The Drama of War
Big and little screen productions inspired by books bring the reality and drama of war closer to home than ever. Defiance, opening up on January 16, focuses on World War II, while HBO's Generation Kill depicts an embedded journalist's experiences in Iraq in 2003. more » » »
