Prom madness is being unleashed around the country, and SLJTeen has found oodles of libraries that are stepping up to serve prom-bound teens. Whether offering workshops with tips on make-up, tuxes or nails, or actually providing prom dresses and accessories, these libraries demonstrate that a little ingenuity and imagination can go a long way in creating high-touch, low-cost programs that appeals to teens, and their caregivers.—Dodie Ownes, editor

  • Prom Madness
Did you know that the institution we now call “prom” began in the late 19th century? Prom is actually the shortened form of promenade, which was basically a parade of guests held at the start of a formal event or celebration. U.K. Teenagers Would Rather Read

According to the results of a survey released by Sky Arts, a provider of TV programming throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland, close to half of U.K. teens would “rather read books than speak to their friends on social networks or other online sites.” Commissioned by The Book Show, Sky Arts dedicated literary channel, the survey also indicated that interest in book clubs is no fluke, with 47 percent of adults questioned indicating that they had joined a group in the past year.

Not On The Test

Philosopher-entertainer Tom Chapin is worried. "We are teaching by rote again—where the test, and only the test, becomes the reason to teach and study," he says. "It's no secret that American industry has outsourced most factory jobs to other countries to take advantage of cheaper labor costs. So why are we putting so much effort into a form of education in which there is no creativity? This is the time that our youth should be taught to think out of the box, not be put into a tighter one!" Check out the poignant and funny song Chapin and E-Town host John Forster created for NPR's Morning Edition, titled Not On The Test.
