If your class is one of the many observing caterpillar habitats this spring or studying those extraordinary creatures, butterflies, dive into Joy Fleishhacker's article, "Butterfly Wonders," filled with great books to read about the insects. Teens on their way to adulthood experience their own metamorphoses and each publishing season brings new, extraordinary novels that examine this often bumpy passage. Joyce Adams Burner lets us in on some of her favorites in "Oh, Grow Up!"

Other May highlights you won't want to miss: Nick Glass on online reading activities for families, and an interview with graphic artists Gene Luen Yang and Derek Kirk Kim, author and illustrator of The Eternal Smile. In our "Professional Shelf" column we recommend classroom films and a Web site that address teen relationship abuse.

Sincerely,

Daryl Grabarek,

Interview

  • From Writer's Block to The Eternal Smile
Soon after meeting in the mid-90s in San Francisco, Gene Luen Yang and Derek Kirk Kim began working together on "Duncan’s Kingdom," a two-issue miniseries published by Image Comics. "Duncan" appears to be a comic in the classic superhero vein: an unlikely hero avenges a king’s death, winning the hand of the princess to assume the throne himself. The story now forms the cornerstone of The Eternal Smile (Roaring Brook, May 2009), a trio of thematically related pieces. more » » »
