In this Issue

My aching feet! BookExpo America—our nation’s top publishing event, held this year in New York City—can do that to you. Starting with SLJ’s fantastic Day of Dialog at Brooklyn Public Library through the closing bell of the exhibits, the experience can be exhausting, but well worth it. And lucky us: teen literature is hot stuff, with more choices for more kinds of readers than ever. My BEA swag bag is full of evidence. - Dodie Ownes, editor

Kudos to Harper Collins for lightening the load by providing me with online access to advance reader’s editions with just a postcard and pin number. Great for the trees and even better for my back. more » » »

  • Doyle, Marissa. Betraying Season. Henry Holt. Sept. 2009. ISBN: 978-0-8050-8252-4. Gr 7 and up.
In this book, two of the most horrible things that most minds can conjure—murder and rape—are put into the forefront and questioned: If you had to do one or to let one happen, which would you choose? The suspense of that one simple question can make a reader’s hands go white at the knuckles from gripping the book, and shouting, “No, no, no, yes, no, yes, no, no!” while sitting on the very edge of the couch. more » » »
  • Firebirds Soaring. Edited by Sharyn November. Firebird. 2009. ISBN: 978-0-14-240552-9. Gr 9 and up.
The Firebird fantasy anthologies are always exquisite, and this newest one lives up to its predecessors magnificently. Every story is different, and each one takes the reader to a new world or a new part of ours. The stories are a sampling of authors’ works, with many excellent writers included. Even the cover, which shows a phoenix-shaped cloud with fire radiating from its underside, represents the contents and the imprint very well. more » » »

Although the story takes place so long ago, the reader still feels connected to Catherine and to all of the characters, as if the story were happening today. Readers will feel sympathy for her. Throughout the whole book, Catherine is told what to do, and she’s never able to decide anything for herself. more » » »
