September 1, 2009

September is a time of beginnings, and this one marks an expanded Curriculum Connections. Starting with this issue, look for columns highlighting exciting collaborations and upcoming celebrations. Other additions will feature new and original work by children's and young adult authors and illustrators. We've also planned four extra issues for the school year, each one focusing on a specific content area or subject.

In the coming months, we'll be asking for your input on a number of topics and sharing your suggestions. Our articles will continue to address the needs and interests of students on all reading levels, as they update you about the latest titles and online materials for your classroom and professional use.

Sincerely,

Daryl Grabarek,
Editor, Curriculum Connections

Interview

  • Six-Word Memoirs: Are You Kidding?
This month, 800 teenage authors will see their work published in I Can't Keep My Own Secrets: Six-Word Memoirs by Teens Famous and Obscure (HarperTeen, September, 2009). That's right: 800 six-word memoirs. The book has its roots in the January 2006 launch of SMITH magazine, "an online place for storytelling," as founder Larry Smith describes it. Ten months later, inspired by Hemingway's legendary six-word story ("For sale: baby shoes, never worn"), Smith invited members of the online community to write their own memoirs. more » » »

Nick's Picks: Selected Resources from TeachingBooks.net

  • Nick's Picks: Selected Resources from TeachingBooks.net
An author in every classroom: imagine. It's a powerful experience to listen to the author of the book you are reading speak about his or her inspirations and the craft of writing. The good news is that these encounters are possible; most schools are now wired for the Internet and online digital recordings are accessible.

This month's column offers a sampling of TeachingBooks's recordings of favorite children's and young adult authors sharing insights about their work. In these brief audio excerpts students will hear authors express their enthusiasm for their subjects as they reveal how their passions have guided their research and writing. more » » »

Make These Curriculum Connections

  • Love a Book!
It's time to get reading! As children diligently work to develop and improve the literacy skills that are so essential to their academic success, they might appreciate a bit of comfort and encouragement. Written with a child's viewpoint firmly in mind, these books blend engaging visual images with spirited storytelling to introduce the wonders—and woes—of learning to read.

Some of the tales relate the frustrations and triumphs of youngsters who are just beginning to read or struggling to progress. Others illustrate how a persistent mentor can make a difference in a young person's life by giving the gift of literacy. Also included are books that pull out all the stops to celebrate the joy of reading. Use these titles to hearten, inspire, and entertain your blossoming readers, whatever their skill level. more » » »

What's New

  • Roar for Dragons
Who among us does not thrill at the notion of fire-breathing dragons flying overhead, their iridescent scales radiant in the sunlight? If we can't have dragons in our real world, we can always conjure them up in our mind's eye, with the help of books and stories. This year I've fallen hard for three rousing new middle-grade fiction titles about three very different types of dragons. You'll want to read these titles aloud and/or link them together in a themed booktalk. more » » »

Celebrations

  • Give Peace a Chance
The idealistic lyrics of John Lennon's, "Give Peace a Chance," reflected one generation's poetic response to world events, but today's students have joined a global community that is effecting change on a much broader scope. Contemporary peaceful activism may involve collecting and distributing clean water containers in India, advocating for HIV testing in sub-Saharan Africa, or petitioning for gun amnesty programs in the United States. Local efforts are multiplying as well, with teachers and students actively participating.

If your community would like to get involved, start by observing a day to promote peace and nonviolence on September 21st, International Day of Peace. And throughout the school year consider sharing titles that offer options for teaching peace concepts that are vital to character education. Books can explore subjects such as compassion and fairness, and inspire readers and listeners with stories about Nobel Laureates and global youth movements. more » » »
