    There is still time to nominate librarians (school, public, and academic) for the 2009 Carnegie Corporation/New York Times I Love My Librarian! Award.

    The award invites library users to recognize the accomplishments of librarians for their efforts to improve the lives of people in their community. Nominations will run through October 9 and are being accepted online.

    • National Book Festival Attendance Reaches All-Time High
      Judy Blume, Jeff Kinney, and Sharon Creech were just some of the 70 authors who showed up at the ninth annual National Book Festival in Washington, DC, on Saturday.

      Despite all the rain, this year broke all previous attendance records, with more than 130,000 book lovers crowding Washington’s National Mall. more » » » 
    • Stars of the Book World Celebrate Eric Carle Honorees
      The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art threw a star-studded event in New York on September 24 to honor artist Alice Provensen, celebrated editor Walter Lorraine, Cricket magazine founders Marianne and Blouke Carus, and the cofounder and president of First Book, Kyle Zimmer, all of whom represent four distinct forms of “creative vision and long-term dedication to the art of the picture book and its vital role in supporting art appreciation, early literacy, and critical thinking.”

      Vera B. Williams, David Wiesner, Chris Van Allsburg, and Jerry Pinkney were just some of the more than 200 guests who showed up for the event, which took place at a midtown Manhattan loft. more » » »

    • Welcoming the Wild Things
      Where the Wild Things Are (PG), a live-action movie based on Maurice Sendak’s picture-book classic (HarperCollins, 1963), will be released in theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures on October 16, 2009. Director Spike Jonze envisioned the project and cowrote the screenplay with author Dave Eggers (A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius; S & S, 2000), closely collaborating with Sendak throughout the process. The film combines real actors with live puppeteering, animatronics, and computer-generated imagery (CGI) to provide a captivating mix of fantasy and realism. more » » »

      Located a bit south of Birmingham, Pelham has a diverse population of just over 20,000. Kids have “settled” back into another school year of assignments, sports, and clubs, but they are still visiting the library in search of hot new releases. On the fiction front, no title is garnering more attention with teens than Suzanne Collins’s Catching Fire (2009), the much-awaited sequel to The Hunger Games (2008, both Scholastic). more » » »

Children’s librarians are responsible for reference, readers’ advisory, programming, outreach, and other duties to support library operations.
