  • School Librarians Weigh in on Net Neutrality
With the Federal Communication Commission’s FCC decision last week to consider how to protect—and regulate—the free nature of the Internet, the battle over Net neutrality went into high gear, and librarians, of course, were in the mix.

“I certainly wouldn’t want a vendor deciding what students should—or shouldn’t—read,” says Randy Meyer, a library teacher at FA Day Middle School in Newton, MA. “When it comes to research and information, that’s where we should be able to help them learn how to make good choices, rather than have them made for them.” more » » »

WATCH AND READ

  • Fantastic Mr. Fox
Scheduled to debut in theaters on November 13, 2009, Fantastic Mr. Fox (not yet rated) will soon join the long list of fan-favorite movies based on works penned by the ever-popular Roald Dahl. This stop-motion animated film from 20th Century Fox is directed by Wes Anderson, who wrote the screenplay along with Noah Baumbach. The book, originally published in 1970, has been expanded upon to include more characters and make the story long enough to support a feature film treatment. Mr. Fox (voiced by George Clooney) and his wife (Meryl Streep) share a happy existence with their son Ash (Jason Schwartzman), a comic-book-loving pup who looks up to his father, and their charismatic nephew, Kristofferson (Eric Anderson), who is staying with the Fox family. more » » »

WHAT ARE THEY READING FOR FUN?

  • Tom Spicer, Arlington Heights Memorial Library, IL:
For those teenagers who need more romance-y type fantasy, well–here in our suburban Chicago library they’ve been devouring L.J. Smith’s “The Vampire Diaries” series (HarperTeen) and burning through Ally Carter’s Don’t Judge a Girl by Her Cover (Hyperion, 2009). And everyone’s keyed in on what’s happening in Suzanne Collins’s Catching Fire (Scholastic, 2009).

James Kennedy, author of The Order of Odd-Fish (Delacorte, 2008), recently visited our library. He set up a “Dome of Doom” and screamed ritualistic insults from the book, making his audience laugh hard. We purchased 30 copies of his book and haven’t been able to keep any of them on the shelves. more » » »
