TECH TRENDS

  • Google Plays Host to Breakthrough Learning
Media professionals and educators converged on Google’s campus in Mountain View, CA, to discuss technology, teaching, and new ways to enthrall children at the [Breakthrough Learning in a Digital Age] www.google.com/events/digitalage/index.html forum held October 27–28.

Presenters addressed ideas on how to tackle the continuing digital divide and announced new mobile media initiatives meant to propel education truly beyond today’s boundaries. Speakers at the two-day forum—cosponsored by The Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop, Common Sense Media, and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation—included Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, who noted that efforts to change schools might require greater buy-in from communities at large. more » » »

  • California DOE Calls for Public Comment on First School Library Standards
California is developing statewide school library standards for the first time—and a draft document is available for public comment until December 18.

Last week, Jack O’Connell, the state’s superintendent of public instruction, released an initial draft of the [Model School Library Standards] www.cde.ca.gov/ci/cr/lb/ for the state’s public schools, which outlines detailed library standards for grades K–12 and has a strong emphasis on 21st century skills, explains Barbara Jeffus, a school library consultant for California’s department of education who helped draft the document. But now that there’s a new administration in the White House and NCLB will be replaced by the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), the [American Library Association] www.schoollibraryjournal.com/article/CA6525362.html? believes the issue of school librarians should be addressed under ESEA. more » » »

  • New Moon Rising
Twilighters are gearing up—and already buying tickets—for the next installment in this fantasy film series based on Stephenie Meyer’s exceedingly popular books (Little, Brown). The Twilight Saga: New Moon (PG-13), from Summit Entertainment, premieres in theaters on November 20, 2009. While many of the actors featured in Twilight (2008) return to reprise their roles, Chris Weitz replaces Catherine Hardwicke as director. The romance, drama, and danger continue in this Romeo and Juliet-style love story as mortal Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) yearns to grow closer to forever-17-year-old vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and become a part of his supernatural world. However, her dreams are shattered when Edward tells her that his clan has decided to leave Forks, Washington, to protect her from peril.  more » » »
