Privacy in New Hampshire Libraries

Staff -- School Library Journal, 2/1/2002

Rep. Karen McRae (R-Goffstown) of New Hampshire wants to give parents permission to check their kid's online reading at local libraries. McRae, sponsor of a bill making its way through the state legislature, says, "Parents have a right to know what their children are accessing"—especially if its Internet pornography or other objectionable material. Opponents of the bill say it would burden librarians and violate state law protecting the privacy of library users.
