Amazon dropped nearly $4 million on a rare copy of J. K. Rowling's handwritten book, The Tales of Beedle the Bard, a group of stories rooted in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Scholastic, 2007), the final book of her popular series. The leather-bound volume, illustrated in pen and ink by Rowling and inset with precious stones, sold at auction at Sotheby's in London.
Rowling created seven copies of Beedle the Bard, and the auctioned book is the only copy that was sold. Proceeds from the sale will go to the Children's Voice, a charity cofounded by the author.
