Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed reading your article as a comic! You obviously make reading for your students, and it's great that you've made professional reading fun for other librarians too.

Alicia,
Just a quick note on the Bluford books. They really are only $1 each,
but you have to order them online from Townsend Press at
townsendpress.com. If you order them from amazon or a vendor, you
will pay more. Also, I prefer the original Townsend Press drawings
rather than photos on the covers.
About those reluctant suburban boys? You probably have already tried
these, but Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz, Cirque du Freak
series by Darren Shan, Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan, and
Maximum Ride series by James Patterson. Girls? Twilight or anything
like it. : )

I learned about Bluford High last summer when I worked with teachers in NYC. I remember one middle school special education teacher telling me how he couldn't tear his kids away from reading these books. And at $1 each? Awesome. What other "gateway" books work for urban reluctant reader populations? What about suburban upper-middle class reluctant readers?
