We had an amateur theater in the small town where I grew up, in New Jersey. It was a big part of town life, and both my parents participated in the productions. About the time I was 10 years old, the children's part of the group decided to put on A Christmas Carol as their holiday piece. I had a small part as one of the char women. I vividly remember my father coaching me over and over to say my lines with a heavy Cockney accent. He was quite a ham. read more...

James Kim Fund to Benefit Schools

San Francisco K–12 students may soon benefit from a foundation set up to honor James Kim, a CNET editor who died from hypothermia after trying to rescue his wife Kati and their two young daughters in Oregon in December 2006.

Launched last February, the James Kim Technology Foundation is soliciting donations on its Web site with plans to outfit city elementary schools with computer labs, hardware, and support related to integrating technology in classrooms, according to the site. For high schools, the nonprofit is targeting inner-city public schools and plans to link students with internships at technology companies in their local area.

Study: Girls Dominate Boys in Creating Web Content
When it comes to blogging, posting photos online, or creating Web content in general, girls seem to be taking the lead, says a new report by the Pew Internet & American Life Project.

Overall, online content creation by teens continues to grow, with 64 percent of kids ages 12 to 17 engaging in some form of Web-created content, up from 57 percent in 2004, according to the report.   read more...

2008 Sydney Taylor Books Announced
Three books—focusing on Judaism's most important prayer, on a ghost in post-WWII Europe, and on a modern-day girl's introduction to Hasidic, or ultra-orthodox, Jewish life—are winners of 2008 Sydney Taylor Book Awards.

The picture book The Bedtime Sh'ma: A Good Night Book (EKS, 2007) by Sarah Gershman and Kristina Swarner, which won in the Younger Readers Category, explains the meaning behind the Sh'ma prayer, a central part of morning and evening services.   read more...
