Students eager for a walkabout Down Under have a chance to win a 10-day Australian expedition courtesy of National Geographic Kids and its annual Hands-On Explorer Challenge.
Entries are open to kids between 9 and 14 years old, who must write an original 300-word essay and take a photograph that explains and illustrates how actively the student explores her world. Those entering should also describe the most exciting things they have discovered during these mini-expeditions. | RI School District Pilots Tracking Devices on Kids' Backpacks |
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has blasted a Middletown, RI, school district's plan to install electronic tracking devices on the backpacks of elementary school children who ride the school buses.
Middletown Public Schools wants to put radio frequency identification (RFID) chips on the school bags of 80 Aquidneck Elementary School students to improve bus efficiency and keep parents better informed during delays, says Ed Collins, schools facilities manager. read more... |

| Preschool Teacher Stress Levels Linked to Expulsions |
The level of stress experienced by a preschool teacher has a direct impact on the number of children she expels, warns a new Yale University study. What's more, children in preschool—the first formal education for most four-year-olds—are three times more likely to be expelled than those in kindergarten through 12th grade, the study says.
The implications are far-reaching, says "Expulsion: A Severe Response to Challenging Behaviors," released this week by Yale's Edward Zigler Center in Child Development and Social Policy. "Children with severe behavioral challenges obviously need considerable support to be ready to succeed in school. Therefore, expelling the children most in need of classroom socializing opportunities runs counter to the mission of school readiness," the report says. read more... |

| Theatre Communications Group, an organization mandated to "promote the professional not-for-profit American theatre," has recently published a 10-volume edition of August Wilson's "Century Cycle," presented for the first time in its entirety. This sequence of plays, which Wilson began writing in 1979 and completed just before his death in October 2005, begins with Gem of the Ocean, set in 1904, and ends with Radio Golf, which takes place in 1997. read more... |
