How to Interest Teens in the News? Catch their Eye
 ADVERTISEMENT |
Want teens to read news online? It's all in the way it's presented, according to a new study from Northwestern University's Media Management Center. The study, released January 8, demonstrates that teens rarely hit news sites for information. Instead, they gravitate to social networking sites and places where they can connect with others and read news only when it is literally placed in their path.
"Teens are not interested enough to go out of their way for news," reads the report entitled "If It Catches My Eye: An Exploration of Online News Experiences of Teenagers." "So whatever news pops up in front of them when they turn on their computers—usually the large Internet portals and news aggregators—is what they see." News is also "stressful" to youth, noted researchers. Of the teens ages 14 to 17 that were polled, many noted that news reports made them feel unsafe and reminded them "of the peril in the world." read more... |

| Kids May Be Computer-Savvy, But Not Great Researchers, Study Says |
| Just because today's kids grew up using the Internet doesn't mean they're adept at using the Web, says a new British study.
"Information Behaviour of the Researcher of the Future" says that although there's only patchy knowledge about how children and young adults become competent using the Internet, some clear news has emerged. Most notably, the information literacy of young people hasn't improved with the growing access to technology.

| The Spiderwick Chronicles |
Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies present The Spiderwick Chronicles (PG), a motion picture based on Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black's best-selling fantasy series of the same name (S & S, 2003-2004), scheduled for release on February 14. The screenplay pulls plot elements from all five of the original books.
Helen Grace (Mary-Louise Parker) and her three kids leave New York City and move to a secluded, run-down mansion that Helen's great-uncle, Arthur Spiderwick, has left to her. Jared is hesitant about the experience, but his twin brother Simon (both played by Freddie Highmore) and his older sister Mallory (Sarah Bolger) are willing to give it a try. When mysterious things begin to happen, Jared gets the blame, and he explores the house to find out what's really going on. He discovers a dusty old volume, penned by Arthur Spiderwick, describing fantastical creatures that supposedly inhabit the estate and can only be viewed with a Seeing Stone. Jared and his siblings forget their differences when they become embroiled in an adventure that involves all sorts of faerie species—both helpful
and harmful. read more... |
