Readers—and those who serve them—face a never-ending quest: what to read next. Now there's Books & Authors, a new database product intended to help bibliophiles determine their next read. Released by Gale, Books & Authors is designed to complement today's Web-browsing, providing users with simple menus that allow them to broaden and narrow their searches according to author, title or series, and awards, among other criteria. An "if you like" search suggests related themes and genres. Books & Authors is adapted from the "What Do I Read Next?" print series by Gale, a division of Cengage Learning.

| Study: Higher Test Scores Linked to Certified Media Specialists |
Here's some more evidence that school librarians are essential to student learning: researchers at Syracuse University's School of Information Studies (iSchool) have found that students who attend New York schools with certified media specialists have higher scores on their fourth grade English Language Arts (ELA) test.
Specifically, preliminary findings by Professor Ruth Small and graduate students in the Center for Digital Literacy (CDL) show an almost 10-point difference in the ELA test scores of fourth graders whose schools had certified librarians. read more... |

| Nebraska Passes Antibullying Bill |
Nebraska lawmakers have passed a measure intended to prevent bullying in schools. Although Senator Gwen Howard's (D-Omaha) bill doesn't dictate specific actions that school districts must take, it does force them to set antibullying policies by next summer.
Bullying is addressed in most schools' codes of conduct, but Howard says only 20 percent of school districts have specific policies in place.

| "A person's a person, no matter how small." |
Dr. Seuss devotees will adore David A. Carter’s pop-up version of the perennial favorite Horton Hears a Who! (Random, 1954). The story appears in its entirety, and although the 3-D version contains only 10 spreads, numerous fold-out booklets are effectively employed to cleanly present the text and keep the pacing true to that of the original. The basics of the artwork are the same but the pictures have been spiffed up with a new full-color palette of deep sherbet shades with coordinating background pages. The intricacies of Who-ville are brought to life through paper sculptures that provide both detail and motion. The earnest elephant, colored in a soft gray, is as appealing and expressive as ever. Carter’s version maintains the spirit of the original, while
adding an imaginative and creative dimension to the reading experience. While it may not endure the demands of circulation, this book will be a hit at storytime and a joy for library browsers. read more... |
