‘One Laptop’ Seeks New Leadership Fueled by its breakup with Intel and other hitches impacting its primary goal to supply $100 laptops to children in underdeveloped nations, One Laptop per Child (OLPC) is undergoing a restructuring of sorts.

When it comes to mathematics, American students don’t come close to the level of achievement reached by their peers around the world, says a report by the National Mathematics Advisory Panel, which was presented last week to Education Secretary Margaret Spellings.
“American students have not been succeeding in the mathematical part of their education at anything like a level expected of an international leader,” says the panel, commissioned by President Bush two years ago, adding it was “particularly disturbing” that kids here consistently performed at a “mediocre level” compared to other kids worldwide. read more...
South Dakota has joined the ranks of those who pay students cash incentives. But this particular program requires teens to pass advanced placement exams in science, math, and English—and they must take the class online in the state's virtual high school.
With the help of a $2 million National Math and Science Initiative grant supported by ExxonMobil, the state has embarked on a pilot program that could become a standard for improving math and science education in rural and sparsely populated states across the nation, says Lt. An Island Adventure Nim’s Island (PG), a feature film from Walden Media directed by Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett, will be released in theaters on April 4, 2008. Based on the novel of the same title by Wendy Orr (Knopf, 1999), the movie introduces Nim (Abigail Breslin), an imaginative girl who lives on an otherwise uninhabited tropical island with her scientist father (Gerard Butler) and several animal friends, including a sea lion named Selkie. Nim loves to read—particularly about the exploits of famous adventure hero Alex Rover (also Gerard Butler)—and imaginary friends from favorite books keep her company. read more...
