Amazon.com’s TextBuyIt Lets Customers Shop Via Text Message As if it wasn’t easy enough to unload your dough on the retailing behemoth’s site, Amazon has rolled out a new service that lets customers use text messages to shop. With the addition of the new service, called TextBuyIt, to Amazon’s existing mobile offering, including its mobile site and mobile iPhone site, customers can now shop, compare prices, and buy from Amazon.com virtually anywhere they are, with any mobile device, using either text messages or their mobile device’s Web browser.
“With TextBuyIt, if you’re walking out of a concert and want to buy a CD from the artist you just saw, or if you’re at dinner and a friend tells you about a great book you should read, all you have to do is get out your mobile device, send a text message to Amazon, reply to the response, confirm your order, and your item will be on its way,” says Howard Gefen, Director of Amazon Mobile Payments. read more...

Nim's Island
Maybe it was to lure a big-name actor, but the character of novelist Alex Rover—played by Jodie Foster—has been significantly beefed up in the film adaptation of Wendy Orr’s Nim’s Island (Knopf, 2001), a modern take on The Swiss Family Robinson. Consequently, Foster hijacks the film from ostensible star Abigail Breslin, who really does seem to be having the time of her life as Nim, an 11-year-old living on a beautiful South Pacific island with her scientist father, Jack (Gerard Butler), and her friends Fred the iguana, Galileo the pelican, and Selkie the sea lion. (Yes, they are as cute as they sound. Wisely, the adult actors rarely compete with these scene stealers.) read more...

Tami Albin, a University of Kansas instruction and outreach librarian, remembers getting the message when she was little that it was inappropriate to have crushes on other girls. Albin also remembers the few books available about growing up gay when she went looking for answers in her public library.
Those are some of the reasons why Albin, 38, is reaching out to gay, lesbian, bisexual, trangendered, and questioning (GLBTQ) youth—and their parents—by recording up to 100 oral history interviews that will be posted next September on KU's ScholarWorks Web site, an online digital repository. read more...
