School Library Funding Continues to Lag, Study Says
Despite the growing recognition that school libraries help boost student achievement, media centers and the librarians who staff them still don’t receive sufficient funding, says a new study by the American Library Association.

In fact, for the first time ever, money for school libraries is decreasing, according to the 2008 "State of America's Libraries" report. Nationally, library expenditures per pupil decreased to $13.67 in 2003-04 from $19.14 in 1999-2000—a drop of almost 30 percent. But since then, the drop has declined even more, to $11.24 in 2007, according to the survey, released each year as part of National Library Week, which takes place this year from April 13 to 19. read more...

Teens Score an 'F' in Knowledge of Personal Finance
High school seniors answering questions on a national survey testing their knowledge of personal finance and economics scored a dismal 48.3 percent, according to a recent report by the Federal Reserve. That score lagged behind the 52.4 percent average score seen in the last survey, in 2006, and was the worst of all six surveys conducted to date.

Questions looked at such vital issues as credit card finance charges, college loans, and investment choices. read more...

Speed Racer (PG), a live-action film adapted from the 1960s Japanese animated series, roars into theaters on May 9, 2008. Written and directed by Larry and Andy Wachowski, the movie stars Emile Hirsch in the title role. Speed, a talented young driver, feels compelled to live up to the legacy of his older brother, the legendary Rex Racer (Scott Porter), who died tragically while competing in an event.
