SLJ Talks to WiredSafety's Parry Aftab about Cyberbullying
Cyberbullying is a growing trend—and many kids keep it a secret. In fact, only one in 10 teens who are cyberbullied tell their parents, according to a new National Crime Prevention Council report. SLJ spoke to Parry Aftab, executive director of WiredSafety.org and STOPCyberbullying.org, about her groups' efforts to stop this frightening byproduct of the digital revolution.

What is it that parents and educators don't know about online safety?
Parents are very different from educators. Educators tend to understand kids a lot better. They see what [kids] are doing when their parents aren't around. [Parents] don't understand their kids' alter egos, they don't understand the technology they're putting into their kids' hands, and the capabilities. read more...

April 25–27 is Global Youth Service Day. Its purpose is to make kids aware of the ways they can help by getting involved in school, church, or community-based projects. To help teachers and librarians get kids interested in volunteering, Youth Service America has created a whole bunch of free planning materials. To view and print them, just click on the “Get materials to help plan your projects” link. Here you’ll find a 66-page “Planning Toolkit” and a 52-page “Curriculum Guide” (available in both English and Spanish) as well as posters, topic modules, and cool tip sheets. Other resources include GYSD logos, Web banners, photos, and other graphics you can use in publications or on your library’s Web site. It’s easy to get kids excited about volunteering.
