CDW-G Releases School Safety Report By more effectively integrating technology into their safety plans, school districts could better secure their students—and their data. So says the 2008 School Safety Index, an annual report created by CDW-G, a technology solutions firm.
Of the 403 public school IT and security directors polled in April, 14 percent reported at least one IT security breach in the last year—up from nine percent in 2007. And 31 percent reported some kind of physical breach in the same period compared to 21 percent last year. read more...

Words like foreign, rhinoceros, vomit, tourist, heaven, spinach, ghastly, and tongue are among a long list of words that confuse children because they contain letter combinations that are more commonly pronounced in different ways, says “The Most Costly English Spellings,” which was presented last week at a conference of the Spelling Society, held at Coventry University in the U.K. read more...

Freshen up the Newbery Shelves
The phrase “oldie but goodie” is particularly appropriate for Newbery Medal-winning works, which frequently appear on recommended or required reading lists. Librarians know that a jacket can make or break a book, and even with classics, the added enticement of an attractive cover can persuade middle graders to read the first page…and then become hooked. It’s time to retire dusty copies with old-fashioned, off-putting book designs and replace them with eye-grabbing new editions. read more...
