CES to Feature Toys
Toys aren’t merely child’s play. Consider the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which has invited toy manufacturers to set up shop at the January 2009 event. The January 8–11, 2009 exhibit will feature a first ever Kids@Play summit.
Kids@Play will offer exhibitions, presentations, and talks from some of the leaders in the digital toy realm along with experts in education and learning. Speakers include Gary Knell, president and CEO of Sesame Workshop, who will discuss how kids interact and adopt mobile phones, as well as Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet & American Life Project, who will chat about teens and their experiences in the online world for the conference’s second day on January 9. read more... |

City of Ember
It takes a 14-year-old actress to save the day—well, almost—in this adaptation of Jeanne DuPrau’s sci-fi fantasy (Random, 2003). Saoirse Ronan brings a preternatural maturity to this starring role, but, most importantly, a sense of urgency, which is largely missing from much of the big-name cast, which includes Academy Award winners Martin Landau and Tim Robbins. (Ronan has said DuPrau’s book is one of her favorites, and it shows in her enthusiasm.) But after an engaging first half, the film runs out of juice, much like the titular city. read more... |

| Mary Ann Hoberman Named Children’s Poet Laureate |
Mary Ann Hoberman, a writer whose musical rhymes have captivated children for more than 50 years, was named the nation’s second Children's Poet Laureate, a position that aims to raise the awareness of children’s natural receptivity to poetry, especially when it’s written specifically for them.
“Generations of readers who first discovered poetry in the books of Mary Ann Hoberman remember it not as a dry textbook encounter but as a moment of joyous play,” said John Barr, president of the Poetry Foundation, which sponsors the award. The honor is a two-year term and comes with a $25,000 cash prize. “Her poems tease young minds even as they please young ears with rhythm and rhyme. We honor her for a lifetime of writing poetry of lasting value for young readers." read more... |

Antics in Africa
DreamWorks’ computer-animated Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (PG) will be released in theaters on November 7, 2008. The sequel to Madagascar (2005), in which a bunch of zoo animals (and inveterate New Yorkers) embark on a madcap journey that leaves them shipwrecked and far from home, Escape 2 Africa features the same four endearing protagonists: Alex (voiced by Ben Stiller), a lion with crowd-pleasing charm and show-stopping dance skills; Marty (Chris Rock), a zebra who likes to think outside the herd mentality; Melman (David Schwimmer), a hypochondriac giraffe with a big heart; and Gloria (Jada Pinkett Smith), a sassy yet sweet-natured hippo. read more... |
