So how’s the voting going?

If you’re in a public library and your building is a polling place, let us know. Long lines? Order or chaos? Are people stopping to borrow materials also? Email your stories to our news editor, Debra Lau-Whelan, with the words "Today's Vote" in the subject line.

TECH TRENDS

  • California Schools Not Spending Microsoft Settlement

California schools are sitting on $250 million—an unprecedented windfall from the $1.1 billion Microsoft settlement over the class action lawsuit that claimed the software firm overcharged for its products. But to some, it’s problematic that much of the money remains unspent.

Approximately $200 million—to be paid in vouchers—has yet to be used, according to a story in the Los Angeles Times. This is despite tightening education budgets statewide that mirror the economic downturn affecting the nation. The Los Angeles Unified School District has spent less than $six million—far shy of the $34 million it was awarded in September 2006, the largest amount for any district in the state. more » » »

    • Twilight: The Movie

Devotees of Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight Saga” are breathlessly awaiting the November 21, 2008 premier of Twilight (PG-13), Summit Entertainment’s film adaptation of the sequence’s first book (Little, Brown, 2005). Kristen Stewart stars as Bella Swan, a thoughtful 17-year-old who moves from sunny Arizona to the small, rain-drenched town of Forks, Washington, to live with her father (Billy Burke). At school, she is mesmerized by a mysterious and physically dazzling classmate, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson). Though he at first tries to push her away, their mutual attraction is undeniable, and romance blossoms. href="http://email.schoollibraryjournal.com/cgi-bin2/DM/y/hA0OOPtH0Rpn0DlYO0EU">more » » »

    • Election Coverage from Scholastic’s Kids Press Corp

While most people will be glued to their TVs and computers following today’s election coverage, you and your students may want to check out the reporting of a lesser-known media group—the eight-member Scholastic News Kids Press Corp.

The kid reporters—who range in age from nine to 14—have been on the campaign trail since last January’s primaries and are covering today’s historic event like seasoned pros. In fact, some were even mentored by TV reporters such as NBC’s Brian Williams and Andrea Mitchell, as well as Tim Russert, the late host of Meet the Press. more » » »
