  • Tikatok Partners with Computers for Youth on Writing Contest

Tikatok.com, the online children's book community, is joining forces with Computers for Youth (CFY) as part of a greater initiative to unleash creativity and imagination in all children—and also identify a deserving individual as "Parent of the Year."

In their first joint program, Tikatok and the nonprofit CFY, which works with schools to provide computers and related services to needy families, will run a writing contest for children from low-income households in 20 schools in the New York City area. Participating children will write about how their parent has been a positive influence on their education and has helped them improve their home learning environment. The "parent" can be any adult who works with the child as a learning partner. more » » »

    • ‘Click, Clack, Moo’ in the White House Library?

Chances are you won’t see Click, Clack, Moo (S & S, 2000), The Tale of Despereaux (Candlewick, 2003), and Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Abrams, 2007) in the White House library. But if students at Milton Terrace South Elementary School in upstate New York have their way, these and other children’s books will be on the library's shelves by the time President-elect Barack Obama and his family move in.

As part of an election lesson created by media specialist Susan Penney, last month the school’s K–5 students embarked on a program called “In Books We Trust.” Their goal? To hold a school-wide election of all the students’ favorite books, with top winners intended for the new First Family to enjoy. more » » »

    • Reach Out and Read Reaches Out to Military Bases

Reach Out and Read is expanding its reach. From now on, when a child walks into a pediatrician’s office on one of 20 military bases, he’ll get more than a checkup—he’ll get a new book.

The nonprofit literacy organization, which works with hospitals, clinics, and pediatricians across the country to encourage parents to read aloud to their young children, is piloting a program that will reach 90,000, or 25 percent, of the children of U.S. military families worldwide aged from birth to five years old, says Matt Ferraguto, a Reach Out and Read spokesman. more » » »
