Gay America
In Gay America: Struggle for Equality (Abrams/Amulet, 2008)—the first comprehensive history on this subject for teens—Linas Alsenas chronicles how gay men and women have lived, worked, and loved for the past 125 years. Using archival images, illustrations, and full-color photos, Alsenas, a U.S. citizen who lives in Sweden with his partner, takes us from Colonial times to the present debate over gay marriage.
Why’d it take so long to come out with an historical book about gay men and women for the teen market?
This is still a very controversial issue for a lot of people, the idea of young people learning about queer issues—that somehow they aren't old enough, that the material is inherently inappropriate. more » » »

FRESH APPROACHES
The Unicorn Chronicles
Bruce Coville launched this fast-reading fantasy series (Scholastic) with Into the Land of Unicorns in 1994. As the book begins, Cara, the young protagonist, is being pursued by an ominous stranger and leaps (literally, off a church tower) from her own world and into the land of Luster. There, she befriends assorted magical creatures (including a unicorn named Lightfoot), investigates the secrets of her family’s past, and faces miscellaneous dangers and challenges. Cara’s adventures continue in the second volume, Song of the Wanderer (1999). In August, after an almost-10-year hiatus—and much breath-holding by series fans—Scholastic published the third installment, Dark Whispers, with another volume, The Last Hunt, expected in
2010. more » » »

LIBRARIAN'S INTERNET
Peanuts
Charles Schulz, creator of Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus, and Lucy, was born on November 26, 1922, so why not organize a Peanuts birthday celebration at your library? For starters, click on "Fun and Games" and print one of the 12 Peanuts-themed party invitations, or select an online invitation. Kids can find out more about their favorite Peanuts characters by visiting "Meet the Gang." There are also online games, which require Shockwave. Give the baseball game a try—it's harder than it looks! Computer-savvy kids will love the Peanuts wallpaper, icons, and animated baseball screen saver, and everyone will enjoy sending their friends cool e-cards (available for a wide variety of seasons, occasions, and holidays). Last, but not least, spend a few minutes teaching kids about Charles
Schulz, who created a whole bevy of sweet and wacky characters who are loved by kids and adults worldwide.—Gail Junion-Metz
