The San Antonio Commission on Literacy has awarded Scholastic with the 2009 Literacy Organization of the Year Award for its partnership with the San Antonio Public Library, the San Antonio Public Library Foundation, and other community groups.

The collaboration led to the literacy campaign “Leer da poder” (Reading Empowers), a multi-faceted bilingual initiative that provides residents of San Antonio with resources, special messaging, programs, and products that illustrate the importance of families, teachers, and librarians working together to foster children’s love for reading.

“What San Antonio looks like today is what the rest of the country will look like tomorrow,” says Nelson Hitchcock, Scholastic’s senior vice president of corporate marketing. “What we do here to help create literacy rich environments for Latino children and families is important not only for this city but for what can do and what could happen in the rest of the country.”

A major component of “Leer da poder” is Lee y serás (Read and You Will Be), a program that provides tips, curriculums, and resources to caregivers, community groups and parents for free. Through the program, Scholastic is donating 30,000 books to children in the San Antonio community this year. The Scholastic Lee y serás interactive reading caravan also has appeared throughout San Antonio offering resources, early childhood activities, and literacy games to help prepare children for school. More than 10,000 residents have participated in the caravan’s events, and attendance is expected to grow as the caravan reaches even more communities this fall.

John Braxton, Chair of the San Antonio Commission on Literacy praised Scholastic for “continually brainstorming ways to reach deeper into the community to instill a love of all things literary.”
