Ashley Turnidge -- School Library Journal, 06/03/2009

The Liberty High School Honor Society from Issaquah, WA, recently sponsored a Walkathon for Books which was a huge success. We had more than 175 students show up and raised more than $6,000, a significant increase from the $3,700 we raised last year.

To be honest, we were amazed the event ran as smoothly as it did. It was a beautiful night in the normally rainy Pacific Northwest and students really enjoyed themselves. This year we made the incredibly wise decision of offering an ultimate Frisbee round-robin tournament, face painting, and lots of food eating. The combination of advertising, team participation, extra credit incentives, delicious food and fun T-shirts made students want to stay all night long. Most of the money we raised will go toward expanding the international section in the high school library, and there’s some discussion of even starting a foreign films section. The rest of the loot will go to our partner school in Mumbai, India. We’re already looking forward to next year.—Ashley Turnidge, president of the Liberty High School Honor Society
