Game and Music Reviews
With our kids at Floral Park Memorial High School recently on holiday break, we only have two reviews this issue. Lucky for us, they both feature somewhat notorious and interesting celebrities: Mario, an Italian-American plumber who lives in the Mushroom Kingdom, and Amy Winehouse, the English singer-songwriter who died of alcohol poisoning in July 2011. While Mario Cart 7 is guaranteed to give players the ride of a lifetime, Lioness, a collection of covers by Winehouse, will also transport teens. Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo) Mario Kart 7 is an exciting action-packed adventure game that doesn't disappoint. This game continues to add success to the franchise with more speed and frantic racing moves. Now available on Nintendo 3DS, players have more than 30 tracks (some new and some old favorites) and 17 playable characters to choose from. Grand Prix races are in 50cc, 100cc, and 150cc, with the 150cc version being the most challenging. The opposing drivers are merciless, attempting to stop you at every opportunity. Players must be on top of their game if they plan to advance to the next round. The real fun in Mario Kart 7 is to play against human opponents, either locally or online. Up to eight players can be part of the action, providing hours of unpredictable fun. Fans of Mario will enjoy this new installment with cart customization, hang gliding, and awesome visuals with the best racing and track design to date. Rating E for Everyone. Consisting of 12 previous unreleased recordings-new tracks and alternate takes of old favorites that have been compiled by some of the late singer's good friends and producers-this album reminds us of how amazing Winehouse was, and it's a fitting tribute to her genuine talent, artistic range, and unique capabilities. The opening reggae version of "Our Day Will Come" is sublime. She totally reinvents "The Girl from Ipanema" with a jazzy almost teenage feel that rocks on vocals. The dramatic "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" is intense and emotional, as is the heartfelt "Best Friends, Right." Of course, the most powerful and memorable piece is the beautiful duet "Body and Soul" with Tony Bennett. This final song, recorded just before Winehouse's death in July, speaks volumes about Amy and is a true gem. No matter how you felt about Winehouse, this album does her memory justice.-Maureen L ., grade 11, Floral Park (NY) Memorial High School
