By SLJ Staff
Award-winning author M.T. Anderson is delivering the keynote address for Ebooks: The New Normal: How Libraries are Leveraging the Ebook Opportunity, the second virtual conference presented by Library Journal and School Library Journal. Registration is now open for the October 12, 2011 daylong event, which follows on the success of last year's Ebooks: Libraries at the Tipping Point. That September 29, 2010 conference brought together more than 2,400 public, school, and academic librarians, as well as publishers, vendors, and presenters to discuss ebooks and their impact on libraries and the industry. What can you expect from this year's conference? Keynote presentations and panel discussions, as well as three tracks designed for public, academic, and K-12 librarians to discuss the evolving concept of digital books and how libraries can improve their services and reach more users than ever before. Public librarians will share successful ebook initiatives and discuss how they will transform public libraries. School librarians will be presented with working ebook models on the building, district, regional, and state levels, while academic librarians will talk about how they are mastering the transition from patron-driven acquisition and discovery to faculty adoption. Conference attendees will have virtual access to leaders and decision makers in the library world, from publishers and distributors to educators, library innovators, and thought leaders. There's also time for discussion and networking, and a no conflict time for attendees to visit the exhibits and attend vendor webcasts. Anderson is the author of the National Book Award-winning The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation, Vol. 1: The Pox Party, as well as the dystopian novel, Feed, which was a National Book Award finalist, a Boston Globe-Horn Book winner, and an ALA Best Book for Young Adults. Feed remains a popular choice for freshman programs in colleges across the nation since its publication nearly 10 years ago. The day will close with a Pecha Kucha event, when eight participants give a seven-minute presentation and will feature Lawrence Block, Dr. Sai Gaddam, Dr. Ogi Ogas, and more. "This year we will be hearing from librarians who are making ebooks workâtheir successes, challenges, and the models they would like to see in the future," says Brian Kenney, editorial director of SLJ, LJ, and The Horn Book. "It will be an opportunity for all participants to help chart the way ahead." Ian Singer, vice president and group publisher of SLJ, LJ, and The Horn Book says, "There has been a fundamental shift in how consumers are using new media to digest content and libraries are at the epicenter of this evolution. We will present up-to-the-minute research and explore critical challenges and opportunities to ensure a robust future for everyone who has a stake in the library market." Individual and group registrations are available, as well as special early bird discounts. SLJ and LJ are offering special bundled packages that include registration, along with a subscription to Patron Profiles, a new online quarterly that will track the behaviors and usage patterns of library users and is being produced in partnership with LJ and Bowker Pubtrack Consumer.
