Virtual Miniature-Golf
By Gail Junion-Metz
We're now in the "Dog Days" of summer. It's the time of year for ice cream cones, trips to the beach or pool, and, of course, a round or two of miniature golf with family and friends. Even if there's no mini-course around, kids can always try their hand at playing a round or two online at your library. Use the up/down arrow keys to decide where to tee off. Use the left/right arrow keys to aim the ball, and then use the up/down arrow keys once again to determine how hard to hit the ball (important when you're trying to get the ball inside the Sphinx's mouth). To swing the club, press the space bar. Sounds hard? Try it, you'll find it's really quite simple to master. Looking for a great late summer activity for kids? Hold hold a "Gadget Golf" tournament to discover who's the best "virtual duffer" at your library.

"Phineas and Ferb's Gadget Golf," created by the folks at Disney, is designed to let kids ages 7-15 play solo or with a friend. Each of the 10 holes has a designated par. Challenges include things that kids won't find at a real mini-course. "Gadget Golf" obstacles include toy bulldozers, freezing rays (which make your ball stop and turn into an ice cube), a toy ferris wheel, a mechanical dragon, and even two Egyptian pyramids and the Sphinx. Unlike real mini-golf, hitting certain objects (like the boards around each hole and bumpers) will add points to your score-which in this game is a good, not bad, thing!
