Teen Read Week, October 17-23—Books with Beat @ your library
Dodie Ownes
Teen Read Week is an annual literacy initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), which encourages teens to take time to "read for the fun of it." The 2010 Teen Read Week theme, "Books with Beat @ your library," promotes a variety of titles, and YALSA has a wealth of resources on its Teen Read Week website to help you start planning events and programs for your library. There's even a script for a PSA and three 30-second audio clips recorded by Nancy Cartwright (the voice of Bart Simpson), which you can send to your local radio station, as well as to area high schools and community colleges that have stations. Schools may opt to play the clips as part of their morning announcements, and the PSAs can also be embedded in the teen pages on your library's website. YALSA has added some deal-sweeteners to encourage libraries to register, with featured giveaways from Carolrhoda Lab, Viz Media, and others. Registration closes September 20, so get in gear and register now.
