Lauren Barack -- School Library Journal, 12/11/2007

Those interested in ending world hunger might consider raising a camcorder for the cause.
The World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nation’s food aid agency, has launched a video contest. Hunger Bytes encourages creative types to produce a 30 to 60 second video that illustrates the international hunger crisis. The organization hopes the film project will both inspire students and encourage them to think about how they can help end hunger—which kills a child somewhere in the world every five seconds, according to the WFP.
The WFP sent food aid to 87.8 million people in 78 countries in 2006, according to its Web site. It’s a useful starting point for educators looking for teaching aids on this issue, such as a map with locations the WFP is targeting.
To inspire future filmmakers, WFP produced its own mini-movie called “Piggies,” using imagery from different eating competitions, including the infamous Nathan’s hot dog contest.
But relax, you have some time; the contest runs until August 1, 2008. The video that gets the most views by October 16, 2008—World Hunger Day—will be crowned the winner. The best five will be showcased on the WFP’s YouTube site, with the first-place winner receiving a trip for two to one of the agency’s relief operation sites. Not a bad place to start making a difference.
