PreS-Gr 3–Grandpa has sent Buddy Bear some bags, each containing a project involving seeds, in this book by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace (Marshall Cavendish, 2004). Through a week’s worth of activities, Buddy, with his mother’s help, learns about parts of a seed, different types of seeds, and seed germination. That deceptively simple premise is the basis for a book that also reinforces sorting, comparing and contrasting, counting, problem-solving, and sequencing. Days of the week, colors, and deductive reasoning are also touched on. There’s even a little nutritional information included as Buddy sets a good example with healthy snacks (all of which have something to do with seeds). The story is read by the author who uses different voices for each character. She also created the cut-paper collage artwork. Scanned iconographically, these bold illustrations with simple lines and bright colors suit the text and will appeal to the target audience. This well-planned, beautifully-executed production flows together seamlessly and has multiple classroom applications, making it a valuable addition to school collections.
