Gr 9 Up–For centuries, the Chimera and the Seraphim have fought, unquestioningly, on opposite sides of the same war. Meanwhile, in a dusty shop suspended between worlds, a strange creature dutifully collects teeth for a mysterious purpose. This lyrical and beautifully atmospheric story centers around the forbidden love that develops between Karou, a human girl lovingly raised by four Chimera, and Akiva, a Seraphim soldier brought up knowing only battle and blood. A deeper message warns that deadly wars are often fought over nothing more than ancient prejudices. Hoping to end the war, the Seraphim burn the portals linking Elsewhere and Earth, and Karou finds herself brutally shut out of her family’s world. Still reeling from the pain of a long-lost love, Akiva begins doubting everything he has been taught to fight for—and against. Fearing for her family’s safety, Karou enlists Akiva to take her on a perilous journey to find them. The pair discover love, heal old wounds, and share a tragic story of soul mates who should have been sworn enemies. Karou will finally unlock the greatest mystery of all: the truth of her identity. But a confession from Akiva could destroy everything. Interwoven with this deliciously romantic tale of loss and hope are the gorgeous imageries of ancient cities, mythical creatures, and mysterious other worlds. Laini Taylor’s storytelling is masterful and her character development is outstanding. Brought to brilliant life by narrator Khristine Hvam, this fabulous story will enthrall listeners—and the cliffhanger ending will leave them clamoring for the sequel.–Alissa LeMerise, Oxford Public Library, MI Big Bully: The Best Foot Forward Series. CD. 43 min. Prod. by Big Round Records. Dist. by Recess Music. 2011. ISBN unavail. $12.99.
PreS-Gr 4–For their fourth themed anthology of music for kids, Recess Music tackles the topic of bullies. These 15 current songs, culled from the playlists of and performed by 15t children’s music makers, are perfect to use when starting discussions about bullies. They promote self-esteem and polite actions, often offering positive and constructive choices to deal with the problem. Opening with The Uncle Brothers’ “Bully Bubba” (an alliterative two-step about ignoring bullies), the music flows into Minnie O’Leary’s “Most Valuable Player” performed by Nancy Tucker (a folksy tale about the rewards of playing hard, but fair), then charges into The Hipwaders’ “Time In Time Out” (putting a positive spin on the consequences for misbehavior), rocks into Milkshake’s “Enemies” (about how even best friends can be enemies at times), and closes with Renee & Jeremy’s mellow “Wishing Well” (sending wishes of peace, love, and good will). Among the other performers in the lineup are Lyle Cogan (“No Put Downs”), Susan Salidor (“I’m Sorry”), Lou Del Bianco (“Bad Day Today”), Glenn Colton (“Don’t Bully Me”), and others. The wide range of musical styles adds interest, making this a first choice for parents and educators to use when dealing with the issue of bullies and bullying.–Stephanie Bange, Wright State University, Dayton, OH Golden Kids Rules. CD. 38 min. with lyrics. Smithsonian Folkways. 2011. ISBN unavail. $11.98.
K-Gr 4–Singer/songwriter Chip Taylor (composer of many songs recorded by country artists such as Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson) has turned his songwriting skills toward his family with his first album intended for children. Celebrating families and the love they share, each of the 12 tunes have thoughtful lyrics and are wonderfully arranged and performed. Taylor’s aging, world-weary voice stands in contrast to the youthful innocence of his granddaughters. Standouts include “Big Ideas” (a ballad about respecting the thoughts of children), “Daddy Is a Red Sox Fan/Mommy Is a Yankee Fan” (a celebration of baseball that cleverly weaves in snippets of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”), “You Can Come and Play with Our Toys” (an encouragement to join in on seasonal fun), and “The Possum Hunter” (a toe-tapping story song about Taylor’s son). Brilliant songs by a music legend!–Stephanie Bange, Wright State University, Dayton, OH Music in Motion. CD. 45 min. with booklet. Groove Kid Nation. 2011. ISBN unavail. $15.98.
PreS-Gr 6–If you are looking for a children’s album filled with funky, soul-filled music, driving bass guitar, sizzling horns, and amazing vocals, this one is for you. Musician Rodney Lee and a team of singers and instrumentalists perform ten high-energy tunes that introduce various instruments and musical concepts such as high notes, low notes, and tempo. Many of the songs, such as “Funky Chicken” and “Get Up, Get Down, Get Funky, Get Loose,” get children moving and grooving to the beat. Others, such as “Humpty Dumpty,” turn traditional tunes on end. Since the majority of the numbers last between four and five minutes, most of the songs are too long for story time but would work well in music classes or a home environment. Parents looking for music with a mature sound but lyrics that are spot-on for children will really love this album. A must-have for every collection.–Veronica De Fazio, Plainfield Public Library District, IL Songs from the Baobab: African Lullabies & Nursery Rhymes. CD. 48 min. with hardcover book. The Secret Mountain. 2011. ISBN 978-2-923163-79-6. $22.95.
PreS-Gr 2–This fabulous book and CD presents 29 African lullabies and nursery rhymes collected by Chantal Grosléziat from a number of African countries, including Congo, Mali, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Mauritania, Togo, Senegal, Rwanda, Guinea-Conakry, and the Central African Republic. Eleven languages are represented, such as Lingala, Bambara, Mina, Susu, and Sango, among others. Native speakers perform these tunes that are quite different from Western music—some a cappella and some accompanied by traditional instrumentsp such as berimbau, sanza, reed flute, kora, or xylophone. Titles include “Uélé molibá mákási” (Uélé, River With a Very Strong Current); “Ka baga ne ma” (Don’t Provoke Me); “Ndi le e” (Sleep); “So diyara” (The Joyful House); “Yum-maa yehii jaabe” (Your Mother Has Gone to Search for Jujubes), and others. In the book, each double-page spread features one or two songs/rhymes. Elodie Nouhen provides interesting stylized illustrations, with the appearance of paintings on fabric. The book also includes the performers’ names, the lyrics in the original language with an English translation, and background information on each song/rhyme. The final pages feature a map of Africa with the country names marked and information about the African languages in the book. This excellent production will be a boon to units or programs on Africa as well as multicultural studies.–Beverly Wrigglesworth, San Antonio Public Library, TX All You Need to Know About Tobacco in 17 Minutes. DVD. 17 min. with tchr’s. guide. Human Relations Media . 2011. ISBN 978-1-55548-921-2. $139.95.
Gr 5-9–A vast amount of information about the dangers of tobacco and the additive nature of nicotine has been skillfully condensed and is presented in a clear, no-holds-barred message. Teen hosts, Aidan Shultz-Meyer and Samara Amat, are engaging as staggering statistics scroll across the screen: 1 of 5 deaths are linked to tobacco; 4700 chemicals are used in its production, 60 of which are known to cause cancer. Accompanying the stats are graphic pictures of organs and appendages that have been ravaged and destroyed by the disease. William Farone, former Director of Applied Research at Philip Morris USA, and Joseph McClernon, PhD, a neuroscientist at Duke University, offer solid insight into the marketing and neurological effects of tobacco products. Interspersed are interviews with former teen smokers who tell their stories. A variety of topics are discussed, including the chemistry of tobacco, health risks, smokeless tobacco, second- and third-hand smoke, and strategies for quitting and easing withdrawal symptoms. An must-have resource for health and physical education teachers.–Cheryl Preisendorfer, Twinsburg City Schools, OH Getting to Know the U.S. Presidents: Abraham Lincoln. DVD. 22 min. Getting to Know. 2011. ISBN 978-0-9828-8035-7. $39.95.
Gr 1-6–Mike Venezia is a master when it comes to bringing history to life for kids. He takes factual information and makes it personal, while tossing in funny asides through hilarious cartoon illustrations. This video is based on Venezia’s book (Childrens Press, 2005). A cartoon Abraham Lincoln narrates the story of his life with warmth and humor. Viewers learn about Lincoln’s childhood, education, and political career. Information about the causes and impact of the Civil War and the issue of slavery is also presented. All told from Lincoln’s point of view, this is a compelling, fascinating window into an important time period and shows this president’s lasting legacy. The humorous moments add to the seriousness of the information. The presentation is filled with historical photographs and artwork, augmenting its depth and content, and the background music adds an evocative subtext. Kurt Johns narrates, and his expressive voice breaths life into the character. This exceptional production merits a place in every library collection. Teachers will demand it around Presidents’ Day, but find valuable ways to incorporate it into the curriculum throughout the school year.–Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary, Federal Way, WA Great Empires of the Past: Core Concepts Video Clip Library. DVD. 1:24 hrs. Prod. by Films for the Humanities & Sciences. Dist. by Films Media Group. 2010, 2011 release. ISBN 978-1-61616-897-1. $199.95.
Gr 9 Up–Highlights of 12 ancient empires are presented in capsule yet extremely comprehensible form using a rich blend of images and a pleasant narrator. The program features simple, clear maps as well as photographs of brilliantly colored artwork and classic sculpture. The empires represent a global perspective. In addition to the classics (Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome), Western civilizations (Maya, Inca, Aztec, West African) and Eastern societies (Persia, Medieval Islamic World, Mongol) are included. The information for each empire is divided into three segments: an introduction to the culture that summarizes its significance in its time period as well as its contributions to and impact on the future, and two parts that focus on various noteworthy aspects of that empire. Each segment is individually accessible and runs between two and three minutes. While not intended as an in-depth resource, this program would be an excellent introduction to further study of these central elements of our collective civilization.–Dwain Thomas, formerly Lake Park High School, Roselle, IL Blood Red Road (unabr.). 9 cassettes or 9 CDs.11:15 hrs. Recorded Books. 2011. cassette, ISBN 978-1-4618-0628-8, CD, ISBN 978-1-4618-0627-1: $97.75.
Grade 7 Up–In the first gripping title (Margaret K. McElderry Bks., 2011) of Moira Young’s post-apocalyptic trilogy, 18-year-old Saba ventures into the harsh and unforgiving world outside of her isolated home after masked horsemen kill her father and kidnap her twin brother. Determined to find him, Saba sets out for Hopetown, only to be followed by her younger sister. They are unprepared for the danger and treachery they encounter. Captured and forced to fight in gladiator-style cage fights for the entertainment of the Hopetown residents, Saba never loses her single-minded focus on surviving to find her brother. But her actions could have far-reaching consequences for her civilization. Listeners are treated to an impressive performance by Heather Lind, whose believably youthful voice resonates as the hard, resolute protagonist. The first person present tense narration heightens the intensity and immediacy of the action, as well as Saba’s raw emotions. Lind also gives supporting characters unique voices, and turns in a fine performance of the dialect written by the author. A perfect choice for fans of Suzanne Collins’s “The Hunger Games” trilogy, and a good fit for listeners who enjoyed Kristin Cashore’s Graceling and Patrick Ness’s “Chaos Walking” trilogy.–Amanda Raklovits, Champaign Public Library, IL Goin’ on a Journey: Songs for Every Body. CD. approx. 47 min. Prod. by Note to Health. Dist. by AV Café. 2011. ISBN unavail. $14.95.
PreS-Gr 2–Jill Jayne, the self-proclaimed “Rockstar Nutritionist,” has released her third album with a health-related theme. A registered dietitian with a master’s degree in nutrition and the former writer, producer, and host of the PBS children’s nutrition news program, What’s in the News, Jayne is dedicated to educating and entertaining youngsters about the importance of healthy habits. The 14 original tunes with a variety of musical styles cover the topics of food (“Choo Choo Go,” a rocking tune comparing the importance of good food for the body to fuel for a train; “Nature’s Candy,” a driving number about the sweetness of fruit; “The Water Polka,” about the importance of drinking water); personal hygiene (“Business to Do,” an upbeat ditty about toilet habits; “Bubble Rap,” about the importance of getting rid of dirt; “Brush Your Teeth,” a 1940’s Andrews Sisters-inspired tune about tooth care); and other means of taking care of your body (“Jumping Jacks,” a Caribbean-flavored number about exercise; “Sunscreen,” a 1950s girl group-channeled song reminding listeners use sunscreen; and “Sleep Time,” a lullaby about the importance of sleep). Featuring tight arrangements and a well-paced playlist, this is an excellent choice for health curriculums.–Stephanie Bange, Wright State University, Dayton, OH
