BUZZEO, Toni. One Cool Friend. illus. by David Small. unpaged. Dial. 2012. RTE $16.99. ISBN 978-0-8037-3413-5. LC 2011021637.
PreS-Gr 3–Sporting a tuxedo and a sly smile, Elliot is the type of dapper young hero who can’t abide masses of noisy kids, but when his clueless father suggests Family Fun Day at the aquarium, he politely agrees to go. Avoiding the crowds, he discovers penguins that, “in their tidy black feather tuxedos and their proper posture,” remind Elliot of himself. When he asks “May I please have a penguin?,” his father absentmindedly agrees, assuming his son wants a plush toy from the gift shop. And then the fun begins. Small is in top form here with a flawless design that begins with the crisply patterned Antarctic blue and white endpapers. With a flowing line, a liberal amount of white space, and a limited color palette, the overall impression is one of elegant restraint. At the same time, there is a sense of movement conveyed through an inventive typeface, a varied layout, and dramatic perspectives. The artist plays off the wry text to capture the comic chaos of hiding a penguin at home. Viewers will chuckle at the bird’s antics. Aptly named Magellan, he becomes Elliot’s accomplice–don’t miss him chilling out on several bags of ice while popping goldfish crackers. Toward the climax, viewers begin to get a hint of the father’s passion when he appears in pajamas covered with turtles. The surprise ending has the same satisfying sensibility as Jules Feiffer’s Bark, George (HarperCollins, 1999). A real kid charmer that will elicit “Read it again!” responses.–Caroline Ward, The Ferguson Library, Stamford, CT

GRIFFITH, Helen V. Moonlight. illus. by Laura Dronzek. unpaged. CIP. HarperCollins/Greenwillow. 2012. Tr $16.99. ISBN 978-0-06-203285-0. LC 2011002149.
PreS-K–Griffith’s rhyming quatrains tell the sweet story of a rabbit who–too sleepy to wait for the moon to appear–hops into his safe, grass-lined burrow. He dreams of a sky full of veggies, strawberries, and tender flowers, until the moon’s buttery light seeps into his burrow, “spatters him with moondrops/shakes him out of bed–” and draws him out into the bright, flowery field to dance. What Rabbit does not see is the small gray mouse outside his burrow, a raccoon family watching from their hollow tree, and a deer and fawn asleep in the moonlit grass. Dronzek’s large, oval-faced, jaunty-eared rabbit has attitude. The soft, acrylic spreads show an inky dark indigo sky, flowered fields, mountains, trees and stream, all tinged in the light of a glowing full moon. The successful integration of pictures and text in this quiet poem offers a lovely ending to a little one’s day and an introduction to imagery, as well.–Susan Scheps, formerly at Shaker Heights Public Library, OH

LI-QIONG, Yu. A New Year’s Reunion. illus. by Zhu Cheng-Liang. unpaged. Candlewick. 2011. RTE $15.99. ISBN 978-0-7636-5881-6. LC number unavailable.
PreS-Gr 1-Written and illustrated in mainland China and originally published in Taiwan, this book tells a story familiar to many rural Chinese children. Maomao’s father “builds big houses in faraway places” and can only come home for Chinese New Year. On this occasion, Maomao takes a while to warm up to him. When she does, they make sticky rice balls, enjoy fresh snow, and watch the dragon dance. She finds a treasure, loses it, and then finds it again. When the holiday is over, she watches Mama pack Papa’s bags and he leaves again. This bittersweet and poignant story not only tells of a family celebrating a holiday, but also explores the trepidation and joy of a reunion. Lively gouache illustrations show the New Year’s celebrations as well as Maomao’s initial shyness around her father and her sorrow at losing her treasure. The story of an absent parent returning only during special occasions is one that speaks to more and more American children. The celebrations and traditions might differ, but the story of missing distant family is universal.–Jennifer Rothschild, Prince George’s County Memorial Library System, Oxon Hill, MD

ROGERS, Gregory. The Hero of Little Street. illus. by author. unpaged. CIP. Roaring Brook/A Neal Porter Bk. Mar. 2012. Tr $17.99. ISBN 978-0-59643-729-6. LC 2010042371.
K-Gr 3–Rogers’s third wordless book features the young hero from The Boy, the Bear, the Baron, the Bard (Roaring Brook, 2004). His first escapade occurs in modern-day London near the National Gallery. It involves a soccer ball, a fountain, and a flight from bullies. Fans of the previous titles will recognize familiar characters cleverly incorporated into the art when the protagonist seeks refuge inside the museum. Befriended by the dog in Van Eyck’s Arnolfini Wedding Portrait, the youngster follows him into Vermeer’s A Lady Seated at a Virginal. After enjoying a musical interlude and a gift that later proves useful back in the real world, the twosome exit into Vermeer’s The Little Street, ultimately encountering a canine-caging butcher in 17th-century Holland. Rogers’s visual narrative is both an aesthetic treat and masterful storytelling. Small panels with minimal detail, often on white, focus the eye on motivations, causes, and sequential action. Larger frames, full-page bleeds, and a single, glorious spread generally show consequences–a slowing of activity, allowing viewers to take in the Old World charm of the majestic halls, paintings, and Delft cityscapes–all rendered in watercolor and ink and shown from varying perspectives. The scenes are frequently humorous, as when all of the rescued dogs crowd around the virginal. This rare combination of action-packed fun and fine art yields new discoveries with each reading and is sure to create fond memories for future students of Art 101.–Wendy Lukehart, Washington DC Public Library

SCHAEFER, Lola M. One Special Day: A Story for Big Brothers & Sisters. illus. by Jessica Meserve. unpaged. Hyperion/Disney. Mar. 2012. RTE $16.99. ISBN 978-1-4231-3760-3. LC number unavailable.
Pres-Gr 1–Young Spencer is strong as a bear, fast as a horse, tall as a giraffe, and loud as an elephant. But on one special day, he becomes something he has never been before: a brother. With a simple interactive text and thoroughly engaging illustrations, this book is a perfect blending of words and pictures. Beginning with an image of the child standing beside his grandmother as a car pulls away, digitally rendered oil pastels in bold spring colors depict a dark-haired tyke reminiscent of Maurice Sendak’s Johnny. Spencer awaits his parents’ return by happily running, jumping, and climbing a large apple tree in his grandmother’s yard while large animals appear to define his talents. Short beginning sentences require a turn of the page and a fill-in-the-name-of-the-illustrated-animal for completion (“He was funny–funny as a [monkey].”). Large spreads have a sunny quality and are filled with creatures large and small. When his parents finally return, Spencer becomes “gentle,” sitting with a pillow in his lap as his father hands him the baby. The final images of this loving family will melt readers’ hearts. A special book for the special day.–Teri Markson, Los Angeles Public Library

COREY, Shana. Here Come the Girl Scouts!: The Amazing All-true Story of Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low and Her Great Adventure. illus. by Hadley Hooper. unpaged. photos. reprods. bibliog. further reading. notes. Web sites. Scholastic. 2012. RTE $17.99. ISBN 978-0-545-34278-0. LC 2011008690.
Gr 2-4–This picture-book biography tells the story of Juliette (Daisy) Gordon, a proper Southern girl who was vivacious, active, and loved the outdoors. After she married William Mackay Low, she traveled to England and met Agnes Baden-Powell, the sister of the founder of the Boy Scouts. She was impressed with Baden-Powell’s efforts to start a female scouting program and brought the idea back to America. She started the first Girl Scout unit in Savannah, GA, in 1912 and the organization quickly spread across the nation. Corey tells Low’s story with few words, but a lot of energy. The text is informal and typeset with a variety of fonts and colors. Quotations from the first Girl Scout manual on nearly every page emphasize the “can do” spirit of the organization. A more extensive account of Low’s life and work, along with a short bibliography, is appended. Hooper’s illustrations suggest the time period and reflect the liveliness of the narration. The characters are drawn with bold, simple strokes and the predominant colors–dusty blue, sepia, apple green, and brick red–reinforce the nostalgic feel. This is an exuberant celebration of Low’s work just in time for the Girl Scouts’ 100th anniversary. For a more extensive history, Fern Brown’s Daisy and the Girl Scouts (Albert Whitman, 1996) is a little dry, but full of information.–Donna Cardon, Provo City Library, UT

NIVOLA, Claire A. Life in the Ocean: The Story of Oceanographer Sylvia Earle. illus. by author. unpaged. bibliog. Farrar/Frances Foster Bks. Mar. 2012. Tr $17.99. ISBN 978-0-374-38068-7. LC number unavailable.
Gr 1-5–Readers lucky enough to dive into the unknown world of the renowned oceanographer will discover how a child’s curiosity grew into a passion to explore and protect “the blue heart of the planet.” Born in 1935, Earle grew up in rural New Jersey, where the woods, ponds, and wildlife captured her interest and imagination; she “was a biologist and a botanist long before she even knew what those words meant.” When the family moved to Florida in 1947, with the Gulf of Mexico practically in her backyard, she “lost her heart to the water.” Roaming the ocean floor in an aqua suit, codesigning a one-person spherical bubble, and plunging 13,000 feet in a Japanese submersible did not satisfy Earle’s oceanic wanderlust. In 1970 she realized her dream to “live” underwater; she spent two weeks 50 feet below the surface, observing the daily habits of sea creatures day and night. Detailed watercolor illustrations offer readers a unique perspective of the sea and its inhabitants. A striking spread depicts a 40-foot-long gray humpback whale in deep blue water eyeing a minuscule Earle. Quotes from her journal explain that these huge creatures are surprisingly “…sleek and elegant and gorgeous… they move like ballerinas…dancing in the sea.” An author’s note details the subject’s accomplishments from marine biologist to entrepreneur to environmentalist. Use this engaging read-aloud to introduce students to an inspiring life during women’s history month or pair it with Jennifer Berne’s Manfish: A Story of Jacques Cousteau (Chronicle, 2008) for an ocean or Earth Day unit.–Barbara Auerbach, PS 217, Brooklyn, NY

POTTER, Alicia. Mrs. Harkness and the Panda. illus. by Melissa Sweet. unpaged. photos. bibliog. chron. CIP. Knopf. Mar. 2012. Tr $16.99. ISBN 978-0-375-84448-5; PLB $19.99. ISBN 978-0-375-94448-2. LC 2010025287.
K-Gr 2–In 1934, the Western world had never seen a panda, so William Harkness set off from the United States in an effort to bring one back from China. He died during the expedition. His widow picked up on the cause and went to China herself, something unprecedented for a woman at that time. Once there, she paired up with a local guide; had the right clothing and shoes made; packed medicine, guns, and more into 22 pieces of luggage; and took the long, harsh journey into the country’s interior. They eventually found an abandoned baby panda. She brought it back to America where it ended up at the Brookfield Zoo, just outside Chicago. That panda is now a mounted exhibit at the Field Museum. This is a gorgeous book. The illustrations are a combination of small and large watercolor drawings, background collages using decorative Chinese papers, floral prints, maps, and Chinese lettering, as well as a few photographs. This little gem will be perfect for one-on-one sharing and for those second-grade biography assignments. It’s simply stunning.–Ieva Bates, Ann Arbor District Library, MI

PRELUTSKY, Jack. I’ve Lost My Hippopotamus. illus. by Jackie Urbanovic. 144p. index. CIP. HarperCollins/Greenwillow. Mar. 2012. Tr $18.99. ISBN 978-0-06-201457-3; PLB $19.89. ISBN 978-0-06-201458-0. LC 2011002636.
K-Gr 5–This anthology of more than 100 never-before-published poems will delight Prelutsky’s many fans. The selections are infused with smart and silly humor that focuses on both commonplace and bizarre occurrences. Young readers will love such fantastical creatures as the “scritchy scratchy scrootches” and the “blumpazump.” Heavier topics, such as running away from home, are handled with the poet’s signature wry wisdom. There is something for everyone here, and no two pieces are alike–there are shape poems, haiku, and even a poem written on yo-yos. Urbanovic’s black-and-white ink cartoons increase the laugh factor and add a touch of whimsy. Impeccable rhyme and snappy rhythm make these poems ideal for reading aloud or to use during a poetry unit. Don’t miss this one.–Rita Meade, Brooklyn Public Library, NY

WINTER, Jonah. Just Behave, Pablo Picasso! illus. by Kevin Hawkes. unpaged. Scholastic/Arthur A. Levine Bks. Feb. 2012. Tr $17.99. ISBN 978-0-545-13291-6. LC 2011026234.
Gr 2-5–As the title suggests, Picasso did not always behave. He refused to conform to popular taste or replicate his own successes. Using an innovative and offbeat approach, Winter provides glimpses of the energy, enthusiasm, and dedication that ruled the artist’s world. In covering his early years (his experimentation with style, perspective, and color were not always appreciated), the author delivers a pungent message to today’s young artists: don’t be discouraged if your creative efforts are criticized. In doing so, Winter reminds readers that Picasso, despite being mocked, brought a whole new way of looking at the world through Cubism. The painter is, of course, the dominant, larger-than-life figure throughout–one spread, positioned vertically, finds him proclaiming, “The chief enemy of creativity is ‘good sense!’” Hawkes matches Winter’s storytelling rhythm, supplying vitality and intensity to the spreads with colorful scenes of Paris, people of the time, and fascinating renditions of Picasso’s own work. This book is a boon for art teachers and especially classroom teachers and librarians working to bring an artistic presence and sensibility into children’s lives.–Barbara Elleman, Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, Amherst, MA

ZOEHFELD, Kathleen Weidner. Secrets of the Garden: Food Chains and the Food Web in Our Backyard. illus. by Priscilla Lamont. unpaged. Knopf. Feb. 2012. Tr $16.99. ISBN 978-0-517-70990-0. LC number unavailable.
Gr 1-4–Alice explains how she and her family plant, tend, and harvest vegetables in their large backyard garden. She and her brother wait impatiently for the first sprouts to appear and watch the seedlings mature. Soon Alice realizes that humans aren’t the only ones ready to enjoy the crops. Rabbits, mice, and insects also eat plants, but sometimes they end up as food for other animals. Maisy and Daisy, the family’s chickens, use visual aids to identify various food chains in the garden and show how they contribute to a backyard food web. Zoehfeld stresses the role of plants as the first link in food chains and explains the special role worms play in the continuing cycle. Her clear, conversational style conveys valuable information without overwhelming readers. Lamont’s cheerful watercolor illustrations provide additional details on topics such as seedling identification and edible parts of plants. The depictions of the growing crops and the interactions of family members with one another and their garden exude positive energy. The conversations of all of the characters, including the chickens, are encapsulated in speech balloons. The book will raise readers’ awareness of backyard food chains and encourage some students to try gardening themselves.–Kathy Piehl, Minnesota State University, Mankato
