PreS-K–This book depicts all the best aspects of family life, with animal characters rather than humans. Forest friends picnic together and have a tug-of-war. A skunk pays a visit. A wolf, fox, and rabbit each cheer for a youngster’s performance. Dinner, bath, and bedtime rituals are celebrated by an endearing cast of characters whose framed portraits appear on a page that reminds us that family is all about belonging. Interestingly, each spread presents more than one type of animal, suggesting that the word “family” extends beyond traditional notions of “like” and “kind” and even “species” for a more inclusive definition. The bright, joyful illustrations are a perfect match for this sweet and soothing offering.
VERDICT A pleasurable read for snuggling time at home or for early childhood conversations about family and community.
