Gr 4-7–This fun and accessible introduction to social justice advocacy throughout history combines cheeky illustrations and brief synopses of protest movements and grassroots collective actions from around the world. Loosely organized chronologically and thematically, each episode features a spread that combines cartoon-style images with a kid-friendly narrative. Chapter titles include: “Ancient World,” “Medieval Troublemakers,” “Class War,” “Rights for Women,” “Freedom and Civil Rights,” and “People Power Revolutions”—just to name a few. Unfortunately, the explanations of these struggles for liberty are short on details, and there are no source notes, bibliography, or suggestions for further reading.
VERDICT While the charming illustrations and enthusiastic summaries of civil disobedience throughout human history may engage those who are just beginning to learn about the historic struggle for human rights, there aren’t enough details here to be a useful reference or research source for more serious young scholars of social justice.
