PreS-Gr 1–A deer takes great pride in his beautiful antlers, which have become cumbersome. They are so heavy that the deer has trouble lifting his head and are so tall that they get caught in branches. Eventually, the deer leaves his beloved forest and takes up solitary residence in a meadow. He’s not alone for long. While he’s sleeping, a pair of birds, mistaking his antlers for tree branches, build a nest. Bees move in next. A spider is not far behind. Myriad animals set up residence in the “antler tree.” When a wolf decides to hunt the deer, the bees sting the wolf and chase him away, and when a hunter approaches, the residents provide a brilliant disguise.
VERDICT The symbiotic relationships that form in this animal fantasy are sweetly relayed, aided by colorful and engaging illustrations. An additional purchase, this could pair nicely with Jan Brett’s Cozy.
