¡Todos al Rodeo!: A Vaquero Alphabet Book

K-Gr 3–Young readers learn about the rodeo and cowboys in this bilingual alphabet book dedicated to the rich history of the vaquero. The preface discusses the format of the book and states, “The history of the vaquero begins and evolves with the arrival of the Spaniards in the New World.” From the arenas that hold rodeo events to the sombreros and chaparreras worn by vaqueros to protect them from the sun and the brush, readers discover the influences that shaped such a large part of the cowboy’s past and present. The text explains vaquero traditions as well as vocabulary terms that have been inspired by the Spanish language. Each page is dedicated to a letter of the alphabet; information is presented in both English and Spanish and accompanied by large, colorful photographs. Clear, concise descriptions are followed up with questions, encouraging readers to make observations and reflect. A Spanish photo glossary is included, highlighting additional tools and clothing vaqueros use in their daily lives. A list of U.S. rodeo events is also included.
