Gr 3–5—This series methodically works its way through each baseball position, describing the roles of each player and their importance to the team. Required gear, necessary skills, and conditioning are described in detail. Readers already familiar with the game will recognize that catchers have different equipment than shortstops, but the books dig deeper, describing why particular physical assets such as great speed, agility, and reflexes are even more essential for shortstops than they are for catchers. There's a fair amount of overlap among titles when basic game play, the role of managers, and sportsmanship are discussed, but this series is a complete package—like a balanced ball team, it works best when all the players are present.
VERDICT Worth the purchase if you can buy all four. If that's not feasible, pass.
