Site of the Week--Strange Science

Eric Oatman -- School Library Journal, 9/5/2005

www.strangescience.net

This idiosyncratic science site, edited by a non-scientist, entertains as much as it teaches. Its "Goof Gallery" shows how scientists, even great ones, can do what the rest of us do—make mistakes. A timeline marks some of the great moments in paleontology and biology. A series of thumbnail biographies highlights 2,000 years of science, starting with Herodotus, "the world's first anthropologist."This last section provides space for a celebration of women paleontologists, including the three Marys: Mary Anning, Mary Ann Mantell, and Mary Leakey. Rounding out "Strange Science" is a bibliography that lists scores of books, some accessible and some, as befits this quirky site, downright arcane.
