Gr 7-10. This is a beautifully written story of romance and finding your place in the world. It focuses on a girl who is half human and half selkie. You learn a little about the selkie legend, and you see the main character grow and come to terms with herself.I love this book a lot because not only was it about selkies, but it was about romance as well. The main character lives on an island where it is custom to kill baby selkies each year to keep the population in control. The main character, Elin, does not enjoy the killing and tries to find a way to stop the unjust murder of defenseless babies. She meets a boy who ultimately helps her decide her future, and who helps her find justice on the small island.
The cover most definitely sparked my interest to read this book. The beautiful selkie girl with two seals next to her really captures the story. I love the way there is a pair of eyes in the title of the book. I would have to say is I think the galley cover portrays the book better than the cover that is going to be published for the public (I looked on Amazon).
I really love the galley cover, and I would love to see it on the shelves when this book comes out in October.
I finished this book in three days. It was wonderfully written, and the characters were so loveable. You could feel their pain when they were sad, or you could feel their happiness when they were happy. I would definitely recommend this to a friend. - Megan W., age 15
