Nings for learners--Global Studies
April 15, 2008

For quite some time I've been excited about the use of Nings for professional social networking. I love the energy and the collaborations I see on TeacherLibrarianNing and Classroom 2.0 Ning

We recently launched a Ning for our 12th grade Global Studies class as a vehicle for discussion, sharing ideas, and media.  (Ning is ad-free for student networks!)

If you visit the GlobalStudiesNing,

you'll see our current literature circles on fiction relating to the Middle East and the VoiceThreads our students recently completely on issues relating to Iraq.

All this might look like a pretty good start in using technology for communicating and sharing, to engage. But in our minds, it's still pretty 1.0.

Jeff MacFarland, the Global Studies teacher, and I invite your participation and comments.  We want our students to get as jazzed as we are about the potential for flat global classrooms.

Please enter our book discussions.  Please add your voice (or your students' voices) to our VoiceThreads!

Joyce; So frustrating! We also saw the power of nings for teaching. Unfortunately some nings have inappropriate content for kids and so our regional tech center has blocked nings in all classrooms in all of our schools. It is even blocked in the administrative offices. Now what we need is Edu-ning. Like Teacher-Tube for nings!

Hi Joyce! It is blocked here, so we can't see it. What qualities about this project seem 1.0 to you? Just wondering!

I believe that voicethread is a powerful tool but like everything else it needs to be monitored and students need to know what they are writing, maybe identifying the presentation as fact, fiction, interpretation, or opinion would be a good thing. I just viewed and listened to Islam on ning/global studies. It is news to me that the US is there because of Sunni and Shia fighting. We don't need more disinformation. Check the facts before putting this kind of info for public viewing.
